How to clear previous used disk?

I have a 10TB HDD which was previously in a RAID set.

I want to connect it via ESATA for ad-hoc backups.

When I connected it I got:

External storage device is connected but the file system is not recognized.

So in Windows I deleted the partitions.

Nothing showed in Frontview when I connected it.

Looking at te logs:

So i tried changng it from GPT to basic disk.

Frontview still not showing it.

After some GoogleBinging I tried diskpart clean, now it mounts aparently clean:

But still doesn't show up in Frontview.

What do I neeed t do to it?

  • Of couse, parted is not installed...

I found a USB/SATA device* with a newer Windows box and formatted it. So the immediate problem is solved.

It would really be good if there was an advanced Frontview feature to initialise drives without needing external systems...

    * For the record:

    Simplecom SA491 USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter - worked with 10TB drive on Windows7 via USB3

NexStar NST-D300SU3 SATA Dock to USB 3.0/ESATA did not work with a 10TB drive, showed up a a removable drive but with no disk.

  • Ahh! I said, need to Initialise it...

Seems that Windows box doesn't handle the 10TB well, it shows as ~1TB so it may not be changing the GPT alternate header.

Can someone point me to some appropriate GNU Parted instructions please?
