Lack of Hard drives on HCL
The HCL list for hard drives is very small looking at the 3TB drives there is only like 3 drives on the list. A fast look at what 3TB drives are available below.
Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
HITACHI Deskstar 0S03228 3TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.5"
HITACHI Deskstar 0S03230 3TB 5400 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3030ALA630 (0F12460) 3TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Seagate SV35.5 ST3000VX000 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRS 3TB IntelliPower SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
HITACHI Deskstar H3IK30003272SW (0S03208) 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
I was looking to get the first drive on the list I currently have 1 & 2 TB drives in my Ultra 6 NAS now. But the HCL support from Netgear seems to be limited. What can I do? Or how do new drives get added to the list?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserNetgear tests them extensively before they get added.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeYou are showing the WD WD30EZRX as being on the HCL. Please recheck as non of the lists for the Ultra/Pro I looked had it on their list.
The WD30EZRS that is on the list can be purchased from both Newegg and Amazon, the Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 is available both from Amazon and Newegg. Amazon shows the retail kit PN 0S03228 which is the HDS5C3030ALA630. Newegg also has that as well as the OEM bare drives PN 0S03230 and PN 0F12460 (both are HDS5C3030ALA630. Hitachi uses an opaque anti-static bag with a label on the bag showing the PN on the label on the bag, but the model number on the disk label inside (cannot be read until you open the bag). I have 5 of these drives and 4 have been in service since last June and I am very pleased with them (mine were PN 0S03230). Currently the cheapest is the retail kit 0S03228 at $218. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Interesting, since it is on the V2 HCL. I wonder if it failed for the Ultra/Pro, or if the testing hasn't been done?PapaBear wrote: You are showing the WD WD30EZRX as being on the HCL. There are better and faster drives available, and the list isn't getting updated. I do not believe it is that difficult, and I wonder how important the ReadyNAS division really is to NetGear? I would understand if they were testing and the drives were failing, but if that is the case, at least let us know that something is going on.
KB - grlslzAspirantHCL list is a Joke!! I just purchased an Ultra4+ unit. Checked out the HCL list for harddrives so i could setup the unit. Low an behold most of the drives listed are no longer available.
Called Netgear support and told the rep that I could not find any drives that are on the list from retail stores. I asked support tech want to do. I was told to " Return the Ultra 4 for a refund" WTH!! How can it be that Netgear would rather have customers return products rather than provide a current hard drive HCL list. Very disappointed...sheer stupidity. I guess Synology gets my business!! - HybridNASAspirantYes!
And... how about the "new" 4TB HDDs?
What is going on, NetGear?? Why the silence? Why not just comment what is going on (with relevant info)?
Is it because of the HDD manufacturers change to the HW specifications regarding HDD "self healing" time outs and head parking problems, and the fact that they seem to claim warranty viod if altering the internal settings of the drives?
They seem to have forgotten what RAID stands for.... Redundant Array of INEXPENSIVE Disks... - PapaBear1ApprenticeAs to the 4TB disks, there is only one listed on Newegg (Hitachi). Some have tried that one and some have removed some 4TB drives from the enclosures (Seagates purchased as external drives). The Seagates will not be tested as they are not intended for use in a RAID or desktop. Only bare drives available to the public will be tested. TeknoJnky did the tests of the Seagates last fall and had no problems. The ST4000DX000 which at that time was only available in an enclosure is now listed on Amazon as a bare drive for $350, but is not listed on Newegg.
Another member, put 6 Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 in his Pro Business Edition and says he is not having any problems, but this is not the drive available on Newegg (H3IK40003254SW) but is listed on Amazon by it's Hitachi PN of 0S03364 (note: Hitachi uses an opaque silvery anti-static bag with only the PN on the outside, but only the drive model on the actual drive label. Netgear uses on the drive model and sometimes if they are advised, they will put the PN in the comment block. For example the HDS5C3030ALA640 is available under three different PNs, one for retail packaging and two for OEM bare drive packaging.
