Live Streaming from ReadyNAS 102
I am expecting my 102 friday. I have an old ReadyNAS Duo v1, which will not do streaming. I want to stream audio and video from the 102 to remote devices like cellphones and tablets.
I sure hope it does this, because the support rep said it would. What is needed to stream video and audio out of the 102? Apps in the 102? Apps in my Android devices?
I looked at QNAP and Synology but could not contact a human being there, so went with the Netgear.
Any help or suggestions would help. If I can't get the streaming to work over the weekend it will go back monday.
I also would like to stream to a remote laptop too.

You should have no problems streaming from the RN102. I stream from my RN104 just fine.
I actually have plex server setup on my HTPC (mac mini), but the actual files live on the NAS. I can stream to (at least) 3 iPads at the same time with no issues (admittedly, it is only lowish quality DVD rips, but it good enough for the kids). The plex server app is capable of stremaing to a number of different plex client apps, that are availabe for just about every device out there (computer, iPad, tablets, smartphones, even most "Smart" TVs)
If you don't have (or want) a computer on all the time, the Plex Server app can be installed on the RN102 itself, and should be capable of streaming, although I have not tried it, so don't know how it goes.
I have plex installed on the RN102. The main issue is that the CPU isn't powerful enough to do real-time transcoding.
The main impacts:
-some files won't play through the plex browser interface (and possibly on the plex mobile app, not sure).
-bit rates can't be reduced on low speed connections.
So it will work, though you might end up needing to convert a lot of media.
Another option is the RN202 or RN212. The RN202 handles SD transcoding (and is pretty good at 720p transcoding). The RN212 is new and claims full HD transcoding.
I installed Plex on a PC, tablet and 3G cellphone. Everything was a bit tricky. Plex is buggy on PC and android, but workable.
I have a LOT of music and it is taking forever for the library to update.
But at least now I know a bit about Plex. I guess I will give it a try on the 102. I am sure it will take days to copy stuff too it and then update the Plex libraries.
I found an article that said put mp4s into Home Movies. The mp4s were not visible in the TV Shows folders. Putting them into Home Movies worked. It even did avi's.
I will try out my video files with the 102 and see if it can transcode them. If not, I will have to use a program to convert them.
