NAS placed in addic, can it deal with cold?
Hey, I have placed my ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2] in the addic because of the noise it generates from the fans being always on for some reason. It would otherwise be placed in my home office (below the addic).
Anyway, my question really concerns the chilly conditions up there now that winter is approaching fast. It's basically outside temperatures in the addic. Mid summer probably warmer and I remember seeing the health log of the NAS say it had a temperature of around 60-70c sometimes CPU/SYS. The harddrives was around 50c.
Now, with subzero temperatures outside the CPU is at 20c and SYS at 12c. The harddrives are between 12-14c.
Can the components of the NAS deal with lower temperatures or they at risk dying on me?

From the Ultra Specifications @ http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=3962#T ... ificationsEnvironmental Compliance
0 to 40 C (32 to 104 F)
20% to 80% Humidity (non-condensing)
This means that ReadyNAS products are tested and certified to work at between 0-40C ambient temperature. So while specific components such as HDD & CPU may be reporting temperatures that are inline with their individual specifications, you may be putting your unit at risk if you place it where the ambient specification is not met.
Also bear in mind that if you were to shut the NAS down at some point, not immediately restarting it, even the HDDs may be operating out of spec for a while
Ultimately the choice is of course yours, but I personally would never take the risk of running fragile components like HDDs out of spec - JohnnyVikingAspirantYeah I guess that's the answer I expected. I'll try and relocate it or put some sort of isolation around it so it can keep the temperatures above zero.
