Newbie question re: upgrading firmware on ReadyNas NV+

Hello. Complete ReadyNas NV+ newbie here. Apologies if I'm asking daft questions or I'm asking in the wrong place.

Currently have a ReadyNas NV+ running with RAIDiator 4.1.7 firmware. Since upgrading a couple of PC's to Windows 7 32bit we've started having some issues with file permissions changing to read only after a user saves an MS Office document (as described in the following threads)

http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=54072 (although this is on the NVX not the NV+)
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=29930&start=15

I thought the first step would be to see if a firmware update fixes this. Looks like 4.1.8 is available

Couple of daft questions (I plan to back up all the data on the ReadyNas before I do the upgrade, btw)

1) Is the RAIDiaor Sparc Version 4.1.8 the firmware upgrade I would need ? (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20684/)

2) Does the firmware upgrade reset the device to factory defaults ? Will I lose all the config ?

3) Will I lose all the data on the device ?

Thanks
Coxy

  • Sorry, got distracted as I was posting this. Could someone please move this to Boot, Installation, Upgrade, and Expansion please ?

    Thanks

    1) If that doesn't fix it you could perhaps try the beta firmware: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222 (4.1.9 beta includes a major update to the samba i.e. SMB/CIFS service)

    2) No. It's like installing a service pack on a PC. Things get updated but the data remains intact.

    3) No. The data is stored on a separate partition to the OS/firmware.

Only if you manually initiated a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) would all data on the device be lost. An advantage of doing a factory default after a firmware update would be to get a clean setup on the new firmware.
  • coxy - welcome to the forum. Never apologize about asking a question. As has often been said the only silly question is the one that wasn't asked.

Most of us are users on this forum, and we all started with that first NAS and learned by asking questions. Also the questions you ask will sometimes help another member right behind you having the same problem.

I did note that the of two references you posted and one referenced in one of them, all three were in domain environments (businesses). I recall periodically having this problem on a sporadic, random basis at work with Excel files (never a Word document), but that was on HP servers and Win XP on the workstations. The IT staff never found a solution other than to save the file with another name, and then reboot the PC, after which I could delete the original file and rename the new version.

I have been a user of Win 7 64bit starting on day one when I was able to download my upgrade from MS. I do not recall ever encountering this on any of my files stored either on an NV+ (4.1.7 and later 4.1.8 ) or on my NVX (4.2.15, 4.2.17) although I have hit a file lock on a file that was not actually in use, but had been on another machine here at the house. I would just reboot the desktop and that would free up the file. (I am on a desktop during the day and my laptop in the evening. Desktop is usually on until I go to bed).

If upgrading RAIDiator does not solve the problem, post back with your configurations on the system. I do not have any users set up on my NAS as I am the only one here. All my data is stored on the NAS in one of 3 main shares (the default media, finance and oper). This may be why I do not have permission problems.
  • Thanks for the replies

I'll try and upgrade the firmware next week when I get a min

    Cheers
