NV+ and Western Digital Red Pro?

I see on the hardware compatibility list that the 1TB western digital Red is supported, which makes me think that the 2TB WD Red should work. I want to go from 4 1TB drives to 4 2TB drives, to max out my NV+. I'm thinking I would prefer the Red Pro drives but none of them are on the official compatibility list.

Does anyone have any experience with WD Red Pro drives and the NV+?

The Red Pro should work. The Red Pro is a good drive model and a better drive than the Red.

However if you use drives outside the compatibility list you may be denied support.

Regardless of which drives you choose you should backup your data regularly. No important data should be stored on just the one device.
  • Thanks. I'm really thinking hard about it. There's about a $50 difference, so for 4 drives we're looking at $600 vs. $400, a pretty big difference. It's a big enough difference that I'm considering spending the money on a newer 2-bay NAS that will take drives bigger than 2TB instead, and probably be a little faster too. Decisions decisions... I was hoping the 2TB red and red pro drives would be cheaper by now.

Well SeaGate has just come out with some 8TB archive drives. I wonder if the prices of some drives on the market will drop a little, but changes like that can take a little time.

As 2TB drives are the max supported by some older PCs and our Sparc ReadyNAS systems that could also be helping to keep the price of the 2TB drives up.
  • With the other factors affecting the speed, I wonder if you'd get more out of the Pro except for the warranty. When I had my NV's, I had one with 5900RPM drives and another with 7200RPM Enterprise class drives. Both with upgraded memory. The speed difference in the real world was negligible.

The disks are not the main bottleneck in the NV+. You wouldn't get the Red Pro for performance in a NV+ but rather for the reliability of going with an enterprise drive.

Agreed. Whether that is worth the extra money is a debatable point, and of course different people will make different choices. The Red Pro looks like an excellent drive, but I've been quite happy with the reliability of the WDC Reds I have installed (and their performance in my Pro-6). It's nice to have choices ;-)
