Old NV: Known Good Fan Not Working

I have an old NV that we had been using for about 7 years or so. I have at one point replaced the power supply, and just a few months ago had to replace a seized fan. I found the exact same model that had been in it online, replaced it, although without the inline resistor that had been on it. Things were working great. A few weeks ago, I got an overheat warning. I let it cool down, booted it again, and soon got another warning. Upon examination, I noticed the fan was not turning. Figuring the unit was old and due for an upgrade, we purchased a new 314. But I would still like to get this old NV going if I could.

It turns out the fan is fine, I can hook it up to an external power supply and it turns great. But apparently the ReadyNAS isn't supplying enough power on the fan port. Did I burn something up by removing the inline resistor (although I doubt that?) The fan will ever so slightly twitch when connected to the unit. Everything else works great otherwise, so I suspect the power supply is still good? Could something be wrong with the backplane board, where the fan connector is located? Just wondering if anyone has ever had the same thing happen, and what might be done about it.

Have you checked to see if the PSU is failing again?
  • I guess I haven't, but was assuming it is working since the only thing I have that isn't working on the system is the fan. I would think that a fan wouldn't draw more than the 4 hard drives. Nothing else behaves like a bad power supply. If you have a way for me to check the PSU, I can try it.

Remove the PSU as per the power supply replacement instructions in the FAQ and check for burnt capacitors.
  • There doesn't appear to be any issues that I can see, nothing looks or smells burned, no buldging capacitors, etc.
  • So nobody else has any ideas? Anything else I can test to determine what the problem might be?
