Password recovery is not available (RN10400) (no more warranty or service)

Question

Hey there NAS-Community,unfortunately I have forgotten my password for my old NAS device. It is still working (So I can transfer Data from the NAS to my laptop)but I cannot access the configuration modes etc.Your help yould be much appreciated!&nbsp;Kind regards from Germany

You can reset the admin password back to password by doing an OS reinstall from the front panel.
&nbsp;
This won't affect your data, but will reset some other settings.&nbsp; The network settings will also be set to the default (DHCP with no bonding), and volume quota (on the volume settings wheel) will be turned off.

FWIW, since anyone who steals the NAS can also execute this procedure, there isn't much downside to taping the admin password on the inside of the door of the NAS.&nbsp; That would eliminate the need to do this in the future.&nbsp; Though I do recommend logging into your NAS on a regular basis and looking at the logs, etc.

Hey StephenB thank you so much for your quick reply!

I used to have a friend who was a technology freak and he urged me to buy this product and he did all the installtion and implementations etc. so I have not really a clue about this thing...

(I planned on putting in two more harddrives with the raid function to use all the space available and I thought bevore I do that I probably need to get the admin rights again and I also wondered about needing new security updates etc.)

The link didn't work but I found some results on google so I just need to find the right manual I guess?

If it will reset some other settings how does this affect me or the handling of this device?

Yeah thank you for that tip I will do that directly afterwards!

But maybe I need to double check if I find a German manual just to be save with my mother tongue because I dont want to mess up the system^^

Somehow there was a space included at the end of the hyperlink.&nbsp; I've fixed that, so it should work now.&nbsp; I believe Netgear only provides English manuals.&nbsp; Regrettable.

At most you'd need to restore the original settings.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
You likely already are using the default network configuration - if that is the case, you won't need to change anything there.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
As far as volume quota goes, you can just re-enable it from the volume settings wheel (on the volume tab).&nbsp; If volume quota is disabled, you won't see the details of how much space each share is using on the share page of the admin ui.

I have a&nbsp;RN10400 that won't let me login after a firmware update last monthIt has OS 6.4 i thinkI don't want to loose my data by trying to reset so&nbsp;If I remove all the drives and then reset to default pass word so I can access it through Raidrcan I just reinstall the drives in the proper order and not loose my stored data?&nbsp;Or after the reset is the data on the drives inaccessable?&nbsp;I have 4 x 4TB drives in this and don't want to loose all that data.&nbsp;Also, In my searches it appears that the 6.? firmware allows larger drives on this NAS.or am mistaken ?&nbsp;Thanks for any help

Wow, you are way out of date with your OS version unless you mean 6.10.4 and just mis-typed.&nbsp; If you really have 6.4, there have been many changes since then, and you should update once you get the problem resolved and you should continue to check for updates occasionally.&nbsp; The release notes have this warning:&nbsp;ReadyNAS 102, 104, and 2120 systems must not be updated directly to 6.10.x from 6.3.x or older firmware. They must first be updated to either 6.2.5 or 6.3.5 then to 6.5.2 and then to 6.10.x.It doesn't say so, but I believe that anyone between 6.3.5 and 6.5.2 should also update to 6.5.2 first before any version after that.&nbsp;The OS and all configuration items are stored on the drives, not in the flash, so you cannot reset the password without the drives installed.&nbsp; Unless there is some underlying problem on the NAS, an OS re-install to restore the default password is safe.&nbsp; But you should always have a current backup, anyway.&nbsp;The drive size OS6 can handle has not changed since 6.4.&nbsp; The documentation for each NAS just lists the max capacity based on the largest drives available at the time the NAS was released.&nbsp; So, it can theoretically handle anything you throw at it.&nbsp; But, you have one of the the lowest powered OS6 NAS that is made, and maxing out the drive space may not work out well, even though it theoretically&nbsp;works.
