Planned ReadyNAS 516 with Crucial MX200 1TB disks
Hi,
I am currently planning to move an existing physical server into a VirtualBox instance on a ReadyNAS 516. To achieve max performance within the VM I would like to install several Crucial MX200 SSDs instead of classical HDDs in the 516 box. Does this make sense or will I get problems or are there other options I should think of?
Thanks,
Campus

For performance SSDs make a lot of sense. If you don't already have the ReadyNAS you may wish to consider the 716X too as that has 10GBase-T ports.
Note that you should use disks from the compatibility list.
If you have issues using Virtualbox you can seek help here but support will be unable to help. - CampusLuminaryI already have a 516 running VirtualBox hosting 4 VMs but based on Seagate ST4000VN000 disks so setting up VirtualBox should not be a problem. The HCL only lists very old SSDs and no current one but I hope I can assume that a modern SSD like the Crucial MX200 will also run without a problem. Do you have any experience with a SSD in a 516? Are all SATA ports the same or should I prefer specific ports for the SSDs?
The 716x is out because 10GB isn't necessary and the price is insane here in Germany especially compared to the 516 (1000EUR vs. 2800EUR). - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe top two ports are SATA III so would work best with SSDs out of the ports.
- CampusLuminaryThanks for the hint.
