I cannot envision any mechanism that would would result in the NAS creating bad sectors on a drive. Out-of-spec power or excessive vibration is the closest I can come, but both are a stretch.
I'd buy a new drive (different model) myself, and use the recertified drive somewhere else. Search this forum using the specific drive model you are considering before purchase.
