ReadyNAS 102 6.5.1 Upgrade Issues

My set up is a ReadyNAS 102 using a powered Seagate 2TB SRD00F2 USB drive for backup. Firmware was 6.4.2. This had worked flawlessly for many months, maybe a year. The ReadyNAS is less than 40% used Snapshots enabled.

Backup tasks were running with a couple of small backups running daily, and a few running weekly at different times to the daily. Iwasn't getting any conflict errors. So, all looked ok.

I logged on to the unit for the first time in a few months, and it advised me there was a firmware upgrade available. So I checked that all backups had completed (all ok) and took the upgrade. I wish I hadn't!

The upgrade went ahead, the unit was restarted, and I looked to check all was OK. It wasn't. First thing I noticed was I was getting this error:

ReadyNAS Error.jpg

The backup tasks were all showing an error along the lines of "unit not available". Before the upgrade the USB drive was USB_HDD_9 after the upgrade it had become USB_HDD_10 so the backup tasks did not know about it.

So I deleted the tasks and started again. That was a nightmare. The unit just became unresponsive. I swapped the USB backup cable, and connectors on the ReadyNAS - no difference. I took the USB backup drive off and checked it on a PC that said there were errors on the drive. So I fixed those and tried again - no difference. The backup USB works fine on a PC and all the files looked ok.

So I downgraded to 6.4.2, all the same including the error.

The only app I  run is Plex. I deleted that, no difference. Restarted the ReadyNAS, no difference, reinstalled Plex, no difference.

To cut a long story short I bought another 2TB drive, set up the backup tasks again and all ran OK. Albeit slowly because I was backing up around 700GB. After a while that all happened and all now seems to be back to normal apart from the error message.

One additional thing I have now tried for the first time is to use the eSATA port, I cannot get any drive to be recognised on that, I have tried several drives, have restarted the ReadyNAS.

So several questions:

  • Is firmware 6.5.1 appropriate for a low end unit like the 102?
  • Should I be concerned about the error?
  • Shouldn't the eSATA drive be recognised automatically?

Pierre

    Hi Pierre57,

    Welcome to the community!

Here are the answers to your questions.

    • Is firmware 6.5.1 appropriate for a low end unit like the 102? Yes, there shouldn't be any problem with 100 series running the latest 6.5.1 firmware.
    • Should I be concerned about the error? I'm not quite certain about this error message but I could pass this along to my colleagues.
    • Shouldn't the eSATA drive be recognised automatically? What was the file format of the hard drive?

    Kind regards,

      Thanks for the reply BrianL.

It would be useful to know what the error is, and how it could be fixed thanks.

The eSATA drives have all been NTFS 2.5inch drives. The lack of any "whirring" makes me think the drives aren't  spinning up so I am thinking it may be a power issue. Does the ReadyNAS provide power through the eSATA PORT?

No.  There is a variant of eSATA called eSATAp that includes power.  But normal eSATA doesn't provide power, and that is what the NAS uses.

The error codes are dynamically generated.  I'll see if I can track down where that one comes from.

Are you using ReadyCLOUD at all? An error that starts with 18 is from the ReadyCLOUD sync functions (formerly ReadyDROP). I haven't dug deep into what the full error is but I sent you a PM and I can probably find it faster using your unit than scanning the code :P

      Thanks kohdee,

I did sign up for ReadyCloud a long time ago, but rarely used it. I recall there was an email about signing up again but didn't bother. Maybe that is the issue?

I only saw this error message for the first time after the upgrade to 6.5.1, and see it when looking at Shares. I know that it was not there before upgrading.

Thanks for the PM, I will respond.

        Thanks for the access.

18007020001 is "Cloud Owner for this device cannot be resolved"

You upgraded to 6.5.1 then went back to 6.4.2, which is not supported.

This is probably because we made a lot of changes to ReadyCLOUD server in 6.5, and as a result, you would be unable to use ReadyCLOUD in 6.4.2.
Since I turned off one of the processes, it seems to be okay now and not giving me that alert when navigating to the Cloud tab.  You shouldn't have downgraded to 6.4.2 from 6.5.
