ReadyNAS 200 series
Hi,
I'm really keen to get a readynas 200 series. It said that the device would be available at the end of January, its still "coming soon".
Is there any information regarding when it might be generally available.
Thanks
James

- giulianozAspirantwell,
I've found an rn204 in italy on amazon for 563€, the rn314 sells for 496€ (no mistakes...). Any comment on that prices ? I'm not finding any reason to go with the 204 right now... - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
You have a quite good deal on the RN314 (selling a bit less than Amazon US if you use google's current exchange rate). So definitely go with the RN314.giulianoz wrote: well,

In the US, amazon is selling the RN204 for $500 (list price), and the RN314 for $550 (discounted $100). Not sure why they aren't discounting the RN200s. - ljungTutorThe 200 is so new on the market so it takes some time before they start to discount them.

Likely true. But IMO the right price point for it is about half way between the RN100 and the RN300 - around $385 US for a 4-bay unit at the moment.ljung wrote: The 200 is so new on the market so it takes some time before they start to discount them.
Sales will languish if it isn't significantly less expensive than an RN300. Which is a shame, the product is big step up from the RN100. - ZBoaterAspirantHmmm. Just paid $314US at Amazon for a RN202. I wonder how much different the performance will be between the ARM and the Atom?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt should be close for windows file copies. Smallnetbuilder.com measured ~98 MB/s for the RN300 series, I measured ~92 MB/s for the RN202 with WD60EFRX drives.
Plex transcoding is not available on the RN200 (at least not now), so that would be one loss. - ZBoaterAspirantThe box of the RN202 says "powerful server using Plex... Advanced media streaming and on the fly transcoding". Does that not mean it can?

The datasheet also says that.ZBoater wrote: The box of the RN202 says "powerful server using Plex... Advanced media streaming and on the fly transcoding". Does that not mean it can?
That feature wasn't available during the closed beta testing (when I received the unit), and I haven't tried it myself (didn't notice that it is was on the datasheet actually). - Equinox1GuidePlex states clearly that transcoding is not available on the ARM architecture.
I haven't seen any ads about the 200 series, but those statements are very strange for me. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI am thinking that transcoding is not available, and that the datasheet and packaging is incorrect. Hopefully someone from Netgear will clarify (and correct any outstanding documentation).
My own statements (that the RN200 fills a useful space between the RN100 and the RN300) assumed no on-the-fly transcoding.
