ReadyNAS 212 USB HDD Size

Hi

I have had a look but i can find what the USB HDD size on the NAS supports, im looking at getting a Maxtor M3 4TB USB3 to back up my NAS.

At the moment im using a MYBOOKLIVE single disc NAS but i was wondered if the Maxtor M3 would be easier and less hassle.

im getting an error soemtimes as per below when the back up is run, ive set the readynas to remove content on full backup so i assume its a permission problem

Status: Fail: Destination is read-only or files/folders could not be created

Would using a USB drive solve this problem.

Thanks

Likely it wouldn't show up with a USB drive.  But it seems to me you shouldn't be seeing this with the My Book Live.

    • Are you using My Book user credentials in the ReadyNAS backup job?
    • Have you checked the My Book Live file permissions from a Windows PC?

It can easily handle a 4 TB USB drive.

I don't have any experience with this particular USB drive, though it does seem to be intended for use with a Windows PC (it has some preloaded Windows software, and doesn't list linux as a supported operating system).  It probably would work fine, but might need to be repartitioned and reformatted.

  • Is anything else also accessing the MyBook?  The errors could be because a file is locked as in use by another user.  The ReadyNAS cannot differentiate between that and a true read-only file.

      Hi

The mybook has no user credentials, its all open to any user. The mybook is not used for anything else apart from backup for ReadyNAS

all file permissions are fine from a local PC, i have 4 backup jobs all the same from the nas to the mybook.

all are regular backups through the week then every 4 weeks they will remove the content and do full back up.

Its only when the remove content and full back up runs i get the error message. So it must be struggling to remove a folder and cant write the files again. The mybook is slow for file transfer so this could be the issue. The ReadyNas is deleting the files and tries to write before the Mybook has deleted them.

Though it could be timing as you suggest, I'm thinking you might also want to try creating a user on the mybook that does have full permission to the files/folders, and then add those credentials to the backup job.

You could also test the timing theory by backing up a small share with the "remove content" option set.
