ReadyNas 4200 V2 processor
Can someone tell me what processor does the ReadyNas 4200 V2 have and how many gb of RAM?
Thinking about picking one up to play around with. Since the board looks like a standard ATX with Xeon processor can someone just drop a different OS like Linux/Windows etc.. on there?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you sure it is a v2, not a v1?
Do you have physical access to the unit?
We do not support running a 3rd party OS on any of our units. Having said that it is possible.
You may also wish to consider the new RN4220 which runs ReadyNAS OS 6 which uses the BTRFS filesystem or the ReadyDATA 5200 which uses ZFS. - Yes, it's a V2 per the photos from the seller. going to be picking it up tomorrow. I plan on using this for my home. The price is too irresistible for a 12 bay. It's not that I'm going to put other OS on it, just wanted to know that it's an option should I get board one day and decide to drop Serv 2012 on there. We use the readynas duo v2 at work, for the most part it's pretty good but on our GbE network I max out at 60Mbps read speed. My Synology seems to max out at 70Mbps but my Server running Serv 2012 clock at 90+Mbps all on the same network. I wonder if this is any better. I plan on getting rid of the 2 bay synology at home and moving to this and move all of my drives to this. I know it's an overkill for my home but it's probably the last nas I need if I can achieve 90Mpbs transfer speed or more. I'm sure if I went with 10GbE its faster but I can't afford that switch at this time and neither does my clients support it. When 10GbE drops to consumer price then I'm ready. :)
Also, does this support JBOD? I've never had a NAS that supported this many drives before, can I have multiple raid array on this plus JBOD for not so important data? - btw: i'm still curious which xeon processor is in there.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe performance is good, but you will find the fans are very noisy. The fans run at full speed as the 4200 is not designed to be placed where noise is a concern.
You can create up to four volumes (up to two can include any given disk).
I would suggest using Flex-RAID RAID-6 on this unit. - Thanks for the quick response, as long as it's not as loud as the GSM712 I think i can live with it. I can tuck it away in the closet no biggie.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe rackmount NAS units are very loud.
- since I'm not going to populate all 12 drives, technically couldn't lower the fan speed with a little modification or even leave the case open. and disable a couple fans. :D
- chirpaLuminaryDisabling fans will likely trigger hardware monitor alerts.
The V1 and V2 are basically the same. V2 just has a different motherboard will LSI chipset that can address 3TB+ HDDs on all 12 channels. The V1 can only see 3TB on the first four channels (Intel), but not on the remaining 8 channels (LSI). - leonroyAspirant

I noticed the 4200 has a custom Supermicro X7SB3 board. Which board does the 4200 v2 have?
Just trying to get a little more life outta my 4200 since I'm hitting the 2TB limit on the disks. - chirpaLuminary
