ReadyNAS 515 newbie upgrading from WHS

HI

I have just purchased a Neetgear ReadyNAS 516 and 6 x Seagate ST4000VN000 4TB NAS HDD.

(I have previously been using a HP mediaserver home server WHS which has just failed but I rescued my data)

I am completely new to this and looking for some tips. I have fitted the 6 HDDs connected the network cable and powered it up. in the morning I will be taking the next steps.

Some initial questions:

What default RAID setting will the server be at. Should I change it. ( I will never need any more space I have gone for overkill here)

How about user accounts. I will be the only effective user, but I may want to allow others to access the data, for example Video files. With my old server I wasused to having folders eg Video, Photos, Software, Public etc which could be viewed by anybody with the password for the folder path and a users folder which was essentially private where you would place my documents etc.....

Any suggestions apreciated

    Hello mediasurfer,

By default ReadyNAS uses XRAID when you install it. Since you are using a 6-bay NAS, it will automatically use XRAID with RAID 6. This is best option for your 6-bay NAS, in my opinion.

RAID 6 is also known as double-parity RAID, uses two parity stripes on each disk. It allows for two disk failures within the RAID set before any data is lost.

Here are some articles about RAID that you might want to read:

What is X-RAID and how does it work with my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system?

How do I change to a different RAID level on my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system?

ReadyNAS leaves all shared folders accessible by any one who is on the same network by default. If you want some shared folders be password protected, you may need to create user accounts for other people. You can use the admin account for your own access. Please click here for steps on how to create user accounts, you may also see this article for steps on how to set permissions on shared folders.

    Regards,

    • Hi thanks for your reply and the RAIID info.

I have encountered my first problem already:

I visited readycloud created an account and discovered my router. I got all the way through to setting the time zone and pressing OK on my server. The webpage said no response within 3 minutes would you like to try again. I couldn’t get past this, even though the server said thank you when I pressed it,  so I reloaded the page and then I was taken to the firmware upgrade. The firmware upgrade completed successfully.

Now when I visit readycloud, my server is discovered, but I get a communication error, check power would you like to try again etc?

I decided to visit the IP address shown on the front of my server, directly and this takes me to the server admin logon. I can enter and setup the server here. When I go to the readycloud page however, my server is shown greyed out, offline, check power, would you like to try again etc. No sever found on the discover tab to setup.

So now I am stumped, any ideas?

  • Now that I granted folder acces to my readycloud account via the admin page, I don't have any problem in seeing all the folder contents..so I think I'm all good and sorted. Works ok in the app too

      Hello mediasurfer,

So it was the permission settings?

      Glad it's working now.

The ReadyCloud account you logged in to the admin page of the NAS is the one you need to use to add/remove users and configured permissions on ReadyCloud URL, that is different from the admin account you use to log in to the admin page of the NAS which is admin/password by default.

The subfolders you will see inside Home share/folder are personal folders of each user account (local and ReadyCloud accounts). Only admin account and the main ReadyCloud account will be able to see this.

      Regards,

      • Yes all seems well. Only thing I cant get my head round is why I had to add my readycloud as a user in ACCOUNTS  to gain the permission and produce the user sub-folder under Home.

I thought the fact i alreay added my readycloud account in CLOUD would be enough
