ReadyNAS communication w/ UPS over network

Hello,

For the life of me I can't get this to work. Using a Netgear 31400 running OS 6.2.3. I want it to discover our Dell UPS rack 2700W HV. I can't get it to work using either the SNMP UPS option (it's made by APC) or the Remote UPS. Using Dell's MUMC software on a workstation to manage the power. Does anyone out there have any experience with a UPS like this connecting to a ReadyNAS?

Cheers,
Scott

  • The error I get is, "Failed to communicate with UPS. Error during post proc." In the details, the error code is 17003030001.
  • Thanks so much, mdgm. The UPS is now connected directly to the ReadyNAS. I'll call this one the "master." I have a second ReadyNAS that is in a different IP range, which I'll call the "slave". On the master, I configured the 2nd NIC of the ReadyNAS to be in the same IP range as the slave. This 2nd NIC is connected to the same switch as the ReadyNAS slave. I verified that I can get to the master's admin page using the alternate IP address. But, I can't figure out how to get the slave to add the UPS that is physically connected to the master. It won't communicate with the master when I try to add the UPS. I used the basic instructions here - http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23121

    Name of the UPS: UPS
    Type: Remote UPS
Address: IP of the 2nd NIC of the master ReadyNAS
    user: monuser
    pass: pass

I know this is unusual and a networking guru could probably get this to work through the switches, etc. But, I'm trying to make due with the limited skillset I have. I really appreciate any help you might offer.
  • The first NIC on the master is configured for the other IP range. But, after fooling around I got them to talk. I actually switched roles between the two NAS devices. I made the slave the master, and the master the slave. Now they communicate, but I have a new problem. The master is on an IP range that only a few other devices are also on. It's 2 NICs are bonded, so I can't add an alternate IP address. So, almost nothing else can talk with the new master. I'm assuming what I have is now a networking issue, not something with the capabilities of the ReadyNAS devices. Any thoughts would be welcomed.
  • mdgm, I went ahead and swapped the master and slave back to how it originally was. I swapped the first and second NIC settings, and connected the UPS directly to it. Now it works. The slave NAS (with the bonded network connection) is now seeing the master. Confused? I am. But, it works. Thanks for the suggestion. Oh, one other thing possibly worth mentioning. I noticed that when I first started this, the UPS connection was having issues and it was renamed to UPS1. I know that with the remote UPS settings, it needs to be just called UPS. I wonder if that was my original issue.

I'm curious on why you want this setup (and am a bit unclear on how your network is set up). Can you provide a few more details?

BTW, since the two NAS are connected via a switch, you also need to protect the switch with a UPS - preferably the same UPS that is used for the two NAS. If its a different UPS, you need to ensure that the switch will remain up at least as long as the NAS - otherwise the power status will never reach the networked NAS.
