ReadyNAS dependant on Netgear servers?
Hi,
I purchased a NAS/Private Cloud device from a different company and had to find out that in order to access the device remotely, over the Internet, I need to log-in through their servers which does some authentication and then redirects to my own NAS. This is not necessarily a problem but their servers have been down a lot and that prevents me from accessing my "Private Cloud". Now I am ready to ditch that device and wanted to replace it with a ReadyNAS device but I don't want to get into the same problem again. Can anyone confirm that a ReadyNAS operates with all its functionality without being dependent on external servers and services from Netgear?
Thanks a lot
Dan

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredApart from the cloud features and the useful remote update feature there is no dependence on NetGear servers
Many users use ReadyNAS units on networks with no internet connection. - dweber69AspirantThat was exactly my question. For the cloud functionality the ReadyNAS depends on Netgear servers then as well? I am looking for a solution that is self-contained, where I can remotely access my personal drive without being redirected through other servers or be dependent on other services and servers. I guess I have to keep looking, maybe I just need to run an instance of owncloud myself.
- tony359ApprenticeIf I understand your question, you can setup your NAS so you can access it remotely without being redirected to a Netgear server, as you could do with any computer.
ReadyCloud is a service which gives you full access of your NAS from anywhere without having to deal with routers and networking. That is depending on Netgear servers. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou don't have to use the in-built cloud features to access it remotely. You could use OwnCloud (there is an add-on for this) to access some data remotely.
You can port forward to access https to access the web admin interface or connect via a VPN or even port forward SSH. For files you could port forward e.g. FTP or use OwnCloud or similar.
Only for the NetGear cloud features or doing remote updates (you can download a firmware image and install locally) or remote add-on installs (again you can download the add-on and install it locally) are dependent on NetGear servers. You don't need to use NetGear cloud features and can access the NAS remotely using methods that are not dependent on NetGear at all. - dweber69AspirantExcellent, thanks.
