ReadyNas Duo Help

My ReadyNas Duo had been working perfectly for the past few months up until a couple of days ago.

I was streaming a movie to my X-Box and suddenly the movie stopped and I could not reconnect to my ReadyNas, it was on, but the blue power button was flashing, so I left it like that. The next day i still could not access the NAS nor would RAIDar detect it. I tried holding down the power button to force it to shutdown and it still wouldn't do anything. So i left it like that. The next day I tried everything and finally decided to pull the plug. When I restarted I was back at square one, no access, nothing. I took out one the drives (WD Green Caviar 2TB) and rebooted and it booted up fine. When i went into Frontview, it said that Drive 2 (WD Disk) was dead, even though it wasn't even in the NAS. I shut down the NAS and decided to boot using only the WD disk and I ran into the same problem as before, no access no nothing. I used my pc to format the drive and it worked perfectly fine, but when i put it in the NAS again, same problem, no access, disk is dead. At first i thought it was a problem with the disk, but when I was able to format the drive, im not sure anymore.

Now the ReadyNas says that my good drive (Seagate Barracuda 2TB) is full, I've only used up around 500gb and now I cant access any data in my drive. I just hope that its in there somewhere.

This is want i want to do.

Reset the NAS to factory defaults with the "dead" disk and see if it will come back to life.

My question is:
After I've done the factory default and re-formatted the "dead" disk, if it works. Can I insert the "good" disk and have it sync my data? Or will it automatically try to re-format the drive.

I just have a bad feeling that the issue is with the ReadyNas and not with my drives.

Thanks for any help!

  • If you reinsert the drive after performing a factory default with another drive, and that drive in the unit, it will reformat and add to the new array. The only way around that, is if the factory default restores the WD drive to operating status, is to shut down the NAS, remove the WD drive, install the Seagate and reboot. Then the unit may boot on the one drive (you indicated you were having problems with that drive as well). If it boots successfully, then hot add the WD drive which will be reformatted and added to the array.

If you can get the NAS to boot on only the Seagate drive it would be a good time to perform a backup of all the data. As it is currently, your data is at risk. It is always advisable to maintain a current and complete backup of your all your data, and if that is not feasible, at least your critical data that cannot be replaced - like family photos, financial records, etc.
  • Thanks Papa Bear.

I tried doing everything and I ended up having the drive replaced (it was still under warranty). I put in the new drive and the NAS resynced. Now the problem is that all my files are gone, the shares cant be found and Frontview says that my disks are 100% full, when I should only have about 25% full.
  • Open a support ticket with tech support. If you have had the unit longer than 90 days, open an on line ticket. When you have the case number, edit your first post and append the case number to the subject line.

Hopefully they can help you regain access to the shares. You did not perform a factory default with the "good" in the unit did you? If you did, the data may be gone.

Remember - never trust your data to any single device, be it a ReadyNAS, desktop or single hard drive. Always have important/critical data such as family photos and financial files on more than one physical device.
