ReadyNAS Duo won't shutdown when UPS running on batteries :(
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo and have connected it directly to my UPS (APC Back-UPS ES 550). I've just bought the NAS and updated the firmware to RAIDiator 4.1.7 (latest).
The UPS isn't really designed to keep things going until power is restored, it literally lasts about 3 minutes so it just gives me enough time to shut my computer down properly. I have the NAS connected to the UPS via the USB data cable. RAIDar and Frontview both report the UPS is green, and Frontview shows some more information about battery capacity. Also worth mentioning, the UPS is on the hardware compatibility list, which is lucky as I bought this about 5 years ago.
I just did a couple of tests.
1. Select shutdown on battery low threshold: Auto
Turned the power off at the wall. UPS alarm goes off. NAS logs that the UPS is running off batteries. It gets down to 35% in about a minute, and the NAS still doesn't shut down. What the hell. So I turn the power back on. NAS logs that the UPS is running off the mains.
2. Select shutdown on battery low threshold: 90%
By the time I came to do the second test, UPS battery only has 35%, so I flick the power off. NAS still doesn't shut down.
I rarely use the NAS, just use it to store stuff (I daren't say the word Backup on this forum), so I wanted to set it to spin down the drives when not in use. But to do this, bizarrely, you need to disable journalling. I'm really not bothered about speed, which is why I went for the Duo, its plugged into a 100mbit router. All I am concerned about is stability, and I get the impression that if I allow it to spin the discs down when not in use, then the discs will last longer.
But I don't want to disable journalling if the NAS isn't going to shutdown when the power fails and the UPS kicks in. I just need it to shutdown as soon as the UPS runs on batteries, it doesn't last very long at all.
What am I doing wrong?

- is0ldeAspiranti have an Apc 600 ES and witnessed the same problem. I also noticed that frontview stopped sending me alerts for some unknown reason, so I was not aware that the ready Nas had stopped auto shut down on low battery. Still have not figured out why it will not shut down, my UPS light is also green on front view. did you solve the issue?
- stretchjrAspirantI had the same problem..but it worked when I had the nas shutdown when the battery reaches 75% instead of 90%. Then I fully charged the UPS and retested...
For some reason when i had it set to shutdown at 90% the nas never did get the message or maybe the nas sensed the UPS as being already below 90 and disregarded the shutdown...Either way I leave it set to shutdown when the battery gets to 75% and have not had issues since...
