ReadyNAS NV+ is failing

I love this ReadyNAS NV+ unit. I've had this thing for probably five or six years. I've upgraded both the memory and drives over time.

Unfortunately, I think the days are numbered on this unit. I came home today and noticed the unit was off. I powered it up and it went through the disk and quota checks fine. All 4 disk drives had green lights both on the unit and in the web based control panel.

As I was verifying things the unit seemed immediately shut off. Fans stopped spinning and whirring. All the lights near the top of the unit went out but strangely enough the LCD panel at the bottom was still lit up. The power button itself did nothing so I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in and it restarted properly.

I thought perhaps there was a firmware update so I navigated through to the web based control panel and sure enough I was on 4.1.10 and it said 4.1.12 was available. I started to download the firmware and at the same time started noticing the very distinct smell of burnt electronics. The kind of smell you get when a chip blows out on a board.

Anyway, the firmware upgrade actually completed and the unit rebooted. Again, green lights on all 4 disk drives both in the control panel and on the unit and what appeared to be a successful disk check.

Then BAM! The unit shuts off immediately; however, leaving the LCD at the bottom still lit up. At this point the smell of burnt electronics was overwhelming. It shut itself down again and I'm not turning it back on.

Here's my question... I have a sneaky feeling the disk drives are still good but something has burnt up on the unit itself. If I remember correctly these disks are formatted with a proprietary disk format (could be mistaken). I need to salvage the disks and contents if possible.

If I buy a newer ReadyNAS unit can I expect to drop these disks in and have it work properly (readable)? If not, I suppose I should try to find a used NV+ somewhere.

Does anyone have any experience or input on the best options for recovering the contents of my disk drives in this scenario?
