ReadyNAS NV+: V1 or v2

I'm planning on installing my first NAS, replacing an unmanageable array of internal and external HD's. The primary purpose will be to backup my various PC (both hardwired desktop and a couple of wireless laptops), though I also want a central location for sharing photos and other files via the LAN (don't care about wider access at present). FTP would also be a plus (though I can wait to implement this). I will probably configure the system initially with an assortment of existing 1-2 TB drives, though will probably need to expand, incrementally, to a 4x2TB configuration over the next year or so.

I'm a NAS newbie. However based on the smattering of reviews and user comments I've found it appears the v1 version is much more mature and reliable - as well as offering (at least currently) more functions (e.g. FTP).

Any recommendations about whether to go with the v1 option or v2 option would be greatly appreciated!

(BTW, is there any sort of comparison chart that would allow me to see the specific feature and capability differences between v1 and v2?)

-Wes

I would go with the v2. The v2 supports 3TB drives whilst the v1 likely never will. The v2 also has a new, modern web-interface. Take a look at the Comparison Charts. Whilst the v2 has a limited number of features at the moment, the feature set may increase in the future.

Also note that proftpd (FTP service) is in the GPL for the v2 and included in the firmware. So if you are prepared to install EnableRootSSH, you can SSH in an enable FTP manually.

Of course the Ultra 4 is another option. Best of both worlds but has the old web-interface. The Ultra is on the x86 (Intel) platform so there is the greatest range of addons available to be installed on it (some projects only have an intel binary available, so there's no ability to make an add-on for another platform).

    The feature set will increase.

Like NetGear began small with IPv6 (not available on the Sparc-based NV+ v1 or yet on the new ARM-based NV+ v2) on x86 units supporting core services, NetGear has begun small with the new UI supporting core NAS features in 5.3.1. 5.3.2 was mainly a bug fix release. There are plans to increase the feature set in future firmware. I believe the iTunes Streaming Server feature is one that has been mentioned elsewhere.

Now with NetGear including proftpd in the GPL (http://www.readynas.com/gpl) that appears to indicate that they are at least considering adding it as a feature. Whether they will or not we'll have to wait and see.

There is a recent public Post from Yoh-dah stating that additional file sharing protocols will be added, though no info as to which or when.
