ReadyNAS OS 6 (RN104 / RN204) fan speed control

Hi,

I would like to know if it is advisable to install a 3rd party software, like fancontrol, to gain control over temparature->fan speed settings (shared experinces are appreciated)?
To answer this question I would like to know the following things about the ReadyNAS OS 6 fan control:

  • How does the ReadyNAS OS control the fan speed of a RN104 / RN204 units (kernel or userspace application)?

  • Is it possible to disable the integrated fan speed management (possible interference with fancontrol)?

  • What are the temperature limits of CPU and HDDs to increase the fanspeed (usually it's around something like 750-900 rpm)?

I know that there are some threads about manual take control of the RN104s fan speed, by editing the pwm1 file. The major drawback I see with this approach is that the fan speed is set once and not regularted by the temperature sensors, thus it's, at least theoretically, possible that the system gets into the critical themperature range and cannot regulate the fan speed.

Thanks,
Chris

I would stick to using the fan speed control that we use already. We increase the fan speed when needed.
