If you use disks that aren't on the HCL, then Netgear can/will deny support for disk-related issues.
Many people do go that route anyway, though I haven't heard much here on the ST4000VN0000. I have good experiences with the WDC 3 TB red drives (so I would suggest you consider them along with the ST3000VN000).
