Readynas RN 104 fails flashes when disks inserted
So today the drive stopped working and went into safe mode, I pushed the power button and it turned off but when it re-started it says there were no drives installed and had to connect with the defau...

It sounds like a power issue. The spin-up of the drives is overloading it. It could be the power brick itself (because the LED on it shouldn't ever flash) or one of the internal voltage regulators/converters, which are non-repairable.

Suspect the unit is close to dead but disks should be ok. Data isn't too valuable but would be nice to get it back. Do you know if I can just throw the disks into a new RN214 (if I can get one) and it would work?
It should.

I did think the same, will try the brick from the replacement nas on the old box first to check. I'll update when I get it.

So the new Nas turned up, I was expecting something to look like it had been used but it came in the original box with as if it were new but had only been opened by someone. Anyway, just tried the new powerbrick on my old nas and that fixed it.
So can anyone recommend a really good replacement brick and I'll put this replacement back up for sale.

This is one I have used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NCG1P8X . Says it's for Synology, but same pin-out and slightly more power than ReadyNAS one.
