ReadyNAS 314 powers off when inserting disk
I just received a used ReadyNAS 314 with four 2TB disks. On initial boot, one disk is failed, and attempting to remove it, then reinsert it, results in the unit powering off instantly (not cleanly). On further investigation, this happens when removing/reinserting ANY disk. The disk originally did not have screws holding them to their carriers, but I added screws to hold them in place without any change in behavior.
Furthermore, I have gotten a sporadic MEMORY ERROR on boot here and there, but reseating the RAM seems to do the trick for now. I am currently running the built-in memory test. I do not have the correct SODIMM to try swapping in.
Nothing seems out of place on the unit - no failed caps I can see, scorch marks on the boards, etc.
Is this familiar to anyone? Hardware error, memory error, or something else?
Fixed it - there was a short between the contacts for the front panel (LEDs/buttons/ports) and the front-upper part of the drive cage. See video for a demo of manually causing it.
Fixed the problem by putting a double layer of paper over the contacts, secured by electrical tape on either end. You'll have to completely take apart the NAS to do this: sides, top, rear, drive backplane, and the four-pin flat cable on the side. The top card will then slide out without problem - if it's snagging, you forgot to disconnect the cable. :)
