ReadyNAS 314 powers off when inserting disk

I just received a used ReadyNAS 314 with four 2TB disks. On initial boot, one disk is failed, and attempting to remove it, then reinsert it, results in the unit powering off instantly (not cleanly). ...

    Fixed it - there was a short between the contacts for the front panel (LEDs/buttons/ports) and the front-upper part of the drive cage. See video for a demo of manually causing it.

     

    Fixed the problem by putting a double layer of paper over the contacts, secured by electrical tape on either end. You'll have to completely take apart the NAS to do this: sides, top, rear, drive backplane, and the four-pin flat cable on the side. The top card will then slide out without problem - if it's snagging, you forgot to disconnect the cable. :)
