This could be a power supply issue. The display will say "ReadyNAS" with just +5V available. The drive spinning up and fans on indicate you have the main 12V. But there is a secondary 12V and a 3.3V bus that could have an issue. If you have a spare ATX power supply (or can borrow one from a computer), you can connect it externally to the NAS and see if that fixes it. If the temparary supply doesn't have the necessary 3 4-pin Molex connectors, it shouldn't matter since you only have one drive currently installed.
