READYNAS upgrade suggestions for OS-x

We currently use a readynas NV+ [v1] in our architectural practice for backup/storage of all our work.
NV becoming increasingly un-useable with the Apple macs due to the cnidb errors over AFP we keep getting every week [dont get me started on this, but ive gotten used to sorting it out!]
Were currently at 90% of the 1.5tb storage with all 4 disks - so im thinking its better to just upgrade rather than keep using the NV+?

I have no idea what i need to be looking at getting to last the next 5 years - any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated -

Budget - £3-400 for ReadyNAS excl drives?

NV was originally purchased for file backup/ storage, but were increasingly using it to edit files straight off the NAS - so ideally id like something that could take the load. NV is just gotten too slow with the amount of users.
Approx 12 users ALL mac based office
File storage of vectorworks, Indesign and photoshop. - so 50-200mb files typically
All Ethernet connection
I also rsync it to a NV+ offsite - so could do with this still working on new NAS.
were on 1.5tb now, so say 6-8tb maybe on new NAS

Any suggestions? - would be gratefully considered.

Neal

You can get 6 TB on the NV+ (2x2TB xraid), but that would be the upper limit.

12 simultaneous users sounds like an RN516 would be ideal - but that is over your budget (~£600). The RN314 is near your budget range (£428 diskless) and is still a lot faster than the NV+. A 3x4TB configuration would give you ~8TB, with one slot left over for expansion. I'd avoid the RN104 with your user load.

Right now OS6 systems are seeing some lockup issues - Netgear seems to be actively working them, but still it is frustrating for the affected customers. If you can wait, I'd watch the forums for a bit, and see if these issues are resolved before purchasing.
  • Thanks for the response StephenB - much appreciated.
Looking at the RN314 - it should be fine for our needs, I cant imagine the partner approving £600 +HD's even though its for our entire work storage!

How much better than an NV+ are we talking - its just it is very slow! ... from what I can see where talking x3 read and x4-5 write over afp approx?

I don't know about afp performance specifically.

The RN314 should provide 100 MB/s performance for large file reads and writes over a gigabit network. This is close to the limit of what gigabit can carry. The NV+ is probably around 30 MB/s.
  • Looks like well be going the extra cost on the RN516 - just based on the file sizes were using and we may as well get the top performer.

Not quite sure what the os6 issues are, had a quick look on here - is it releated to AFP on the macs/ we use snow leopard up to mavericks in the office......
  • ah found the lockup issues like you mentioned - is this not just relating to RN104? or is it more widespread?? as in the 516 too??

is the maverick disappearing finder window items still an issue??

The 104 has a ARM CPU and 512 MB RAM and may struggle with large volumes (e.g. 4x4TB disks). The 516 has 4GB (that's 8x what's in the 104) RAM and a very fast Intel Ivy Bridge Dual-Core CPU. They are very different devices.

With a new setup it would be advisable to update to 6.1.5 (or later) and then after verifying the update is successful do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything). This will give you a clean setup on the new firmware.
  • Thank you MDGM - i note your 'unofficial guide for moving from sparc' in your signature - ive already read and saved this for future reference thanks.
