ReadyNAS upgrade to SSD

We currently have a ReadyNAS 516 with 6 x 1TB HDD's , we are potentially thinking about upgrading these HDD's to 6 x 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD's.

I understand that the disks can be hot-swapped, but can a HDD be swapped out for an SSD?

I was unsure due to the fact that they store data differently and a complete rebuild would be a nuisance.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • When you insert the SSD drive, the NAS will reformat.  So there's no issue there.  The key question is whether the SSD has at least as many sectors as the HD you are replacing.

If it does, then your upgrade should work.

If not, then you'd need to rebuild the NAS (e.g. do a factory reset, reconfigure/install apps, recover data from backup).

Can you recommend a way I can find out the SSD sector count? As i have read in the past about SSD disks throwing out false information.

      Thanks

The manufacturer's datasheet is probably the best way.
