Replacing a fried NV & saving the data
I have a first generation (5 yrs old) ReadyNAS NV w/4 1TB drives in it—running X-Raid1 in a Raid5 configuration.
It fried. Just fully failed with the smell of burnt motherboard.
Questions:
1. If I buy a replacement NV or NV+ unit, can a safely transfer the 4 drives, in the same bay order, to a new unit and have everything work (assuming there is no corruption to the drives of course)?
2. Can I place the drives in a newer unit with newer firmware running X-Raid2 and have the data preserved?
thanks,
Jeff

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you mean burnt PSU (power supply unit)?
Is your serial number in this range?: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10259
If so, depending on what region you are in you may qualify for a free replacement PSU.
1. Yes, provided it's another Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. NV+ v1 - RND4000-100) you can migrate the disks across. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another
2. No the RAID format is different so you cannot migrate the disks across to an x86 or ARM NAS. - jwishnieAspirantGreat, thanks for the info. Why are the newer systems incompatible? Are they using a different filesystem?
thanks.
Jeff - PapaBear1ApprenticeYes, a completely different file system. Have you determined if it is the PSU? (You can take off the side plates and remove the upper rear panel with the large fan and then visually inspect the PSU without removing it. If it is the PSU and you have a burned smell, there are probably several bulged and burned capacitors.
