Replicate 314 to a NV+
Hi all,
Just upgraded from my trusty readynas NV+ to a 314 (both with 4 2Tb drives).
Had a question - is it possible to backup the entire 8TB on my 314 to the NV+? Can Replicate work like that?
Interested in hearing your responses?

- vandermerweMasterThere is no Replicate for sparc systems like the NV+, so you won't be able to use it.
You could easily set up backup jobs for each share that can backup your entire volume. These can be setup to pull data to the nv+ or to push from the 314. Raync is a good method to use, slow on the nv+ so you might want to use nfs for the first backup then change to rsync for incrementals.
How are the 2 systems setup, do you have xraid volumes? You have suggested that you might have 8tb of data, does this mean you have not setup the volumes with raid protection? - getadsAspirantThanks for your reply vandermerwe :)
Sorry, I should have been more specific - yes, I have raid 5 setup, so technically I have just under 6Tb available plus the 2tb redundancy making up the 8Tb in total drive capacity.
So if I'm hearing you right, I should:
* Initially use nfs backup job for the first backup (with both NAS's side by side on the same network onsite), where
* Source is 314 Time Machine and Destination is remote nfs (new Time Machine backup partition on NV+)
* Once this initial backup is done, then turn off nfs backup job
* Move the 2nd NAS (NV+) offsite and configure rsync daily backup job on 314 such that
* Source is 314 Time Machine and Destination is remote rsync server (again, Time Machine backup partition on NV+)
If this looks right, questions are:
* As long as the NV+ can be 'seen' by the 314, everything is 'pushed' from the 314. Is there nothing else to setup from the NV+ side of things?
* I guess I should also perform the 1st rsync on site as well just to be sure?
* Can nfs and rsync backup jobs be configured for TIme Machine? (It looks straightforward for shares, but does the Time Machine partition act differently?)
Is that right? Have I missed/assumed/overlooked anything here?
Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction :)
Adam - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI would do the first Rsync on your LAN (after the backup job has run you would edit the backup job properties).
To backup your Time Machine data you would need to select Volume C with the path ".timemachine" as the source on the NV+ - vandermerweMastermdgm the source I think is the 314, is the nv+ destination path the same as the source?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOops. Ah then the path on the NV+ would be different. Create a share such as TMbkup and backup to that.
- getadsAspirantSo just to clarify, the source on the 314 can simply be 'Time Machine' (as made available in Readycloud -> Backup jobs).
The destination can just be a 'regular' share that I create on the NV+ and call it whatever I want, eg. TMbkup?
Have I got that right?
Adam - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes
- getadsAspirant*amazing* - thanks!
Last question - does this mean that the NV+ wherever it is located offline needs to have its own static IP address so that the 314 can find it? (Or is there a more clever way that the two devices can talk via the web)?
Thanks so much - I was going to sell my NV+ on ebay, but now I've found a much better use for it :)
Adam - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredA static I.P. or a dynamic DNS address on a PC on the same network as the NV+ which you can use.
