RN104 Issue Degraded Disk 3
Hi there,
I have a ReadyNas RN104 and 2 ReadyNas Ultra's and one ReadyNas Ultra Pro. The Nas servers all boted up.
When I went to log into the servers I noticed that the RN104 (4 x 4TB) was showng (flashing) data DEGRADED
I am gutted but knew some day it could happen as nothing lasts forever.
I am using RAID 5 so presuming the data will be safe ?
It is strange that this would happen now as last night I was removing some old folders with large amounts of data on them as they were moved to another Nas server already. Would DESTROYing these SHARES cause a problem. After removing the folders I added a new folder and started adding new files for which i want to use this RN104 for, on a temprorary basis until I purchase new HDD's for another NAS that has slots available.
If I remove the Drive 3 will this allow the NAS to be operable on 3 drives. (3 x 4TB) ?
I am presuming that removing the drive I then have to re-sync the data ? Or do I have to wait and replace Drive 3. I do have a 3TB spare HDD which is in another NAS but no data on that NAS as of yet as I am experiencing another issue with that NAS where the System Fan is not spoinning fast enough and the NAS ends up rebooitng. Can I use one of the Drives from that and just insert it into bay 3.
I have added a screenshot of the logs from last night to present.
Many thanks in advance for any help given.

Since you are on RAID5 your data should be protected by one drive failure just like what happened to your RN104 right now. It is best to make sure you have a backup of your data.
We really can't tell when a drive will fail or when it's life will end the same with any electronic devices. It might be possible that your drives are a old that mechanical failures occurred during any activity, it may be possible that a corrupt file did something. It is also best to check the logs (disk_info and smart_history) to check what errors the drive got.
Regarding removing the failed drive, it is best to have a replacement as well since getting another drive to fail will render your data offline and worst unrecoverable. Adding a lower cap drive is not advised/possible it should be the same cap or higher as well

Hi there,
Many thanks for the reply. Yes I accept that we can never tell but it seems strange that out of the blue it happens when removing loads of data but there you go.... coincidence I am sure. Anyway, how do I get the smart logs you were saying ?
Do I download them etc from somehwere?
Many thanks again

You can download the full log zip file. Disk_info.log, smart_history.log, and volume.log all have SMART information. Volume.log also has a section on maintenance activity at the bottom. You can also find disk errors logged in system.log and kernel.log.
