It is a good question, technically if you have both static IP's (with the same subnet) on the units they would communicate( like 2 PC's connected on an ad-hoc). I have not tried this myself, but the problem here is the NAS does not have a switching function (I do not know if this matters or not). So I guess, the best way to know is to try it. :)
