RN214 Hangs after 1:30 mins then wont restart for a few hours

Hi, Hoping someone can help. I have an RN214 containing four Seagatte ST60000NM drives. Recently it failed becoming completely unresponsive, not turning off via power button so I pulled the plug. On re-powering all the lights came on plus the top row of the LCDdisplay and nothing happened. I  powered it down and tried without the drives but with the same result. Next day I took a look and it booted but then hung again after  a minute or two.

I've tried replacing the CMOS battery and running it with no battery but always with the same result, it runs for just over a minute then wont do anything for a few hours or overnight. Can't see or feel anything overheating and there is little difference in the up time whether I have it loaded with disks or not. For this reason I'm not  sure it would be a PSU issue.

I'd like to reset the CMOS and the main CPU board does have a few jumpers but I can't find any  details describing what they are, Does anyone know?

Any help would be much appreciated. Needless to say I have  no  logs to share as I cna't boot the machine.

Failing a repair, does anyone know whether it is possible to buy replacement boards? Seems a shame to bin the whole NAS for want of a main board.

  • Since ReadyNASOS doesn't make changes to the CMOS settings, I'm not sure why you want to reset them.

Unfortunately, pretty much nothing but the power brick is replaceable on the 214, and parts are also not available.

Have you tried downloading the log .zip file in the short opportunity you have?  Also, can you still PING it?  Access it via SSH?

Have you checked the warranty status?  It's three years for the original purchaser.

Thank you both for your replys. Unfortunately it's around 4 years old so out of warranty. Regarding getting logs and pinging, I don't think it gets far wnough throught he boot process to start the ssh daemon although I might give it another go just to see what comes up. Re. ping, no it doesn't respond to pings once it hangs.

The reason for wanting to reset the CMOS was incase it had become corrupted, this can happen when the battery gets old as old batteries don't just drop in voltage but can become noisy and so can corrupt the bios. I've had this occure on PCs in the past, the last time being with my Dell laptop where power management became got corrupted and the thing became too hot to touch and switched off. A CMOS clearout and new battery cured it however, it's also not too uncommon to have to reset the PRAM on macbooks for example. Just thought it worth a go in this instance but if not possible then I'll look elsewhere. Thanks again all for your replies, appreciated.
