RN516 - Boot Loop after power outage
Hi,
I have a Readynas 516 thats now stuck in a boot loop after a power outage. The box starts up, displays Welcom on the LCD, the touchpad lights up, then it reboots, the cycle is around 2-3 seconds.
The boot menu is not accessable, and im trying the usb recovery but not having much luck so far. The unit is no longer under warranty.
This has occoured once before and i gave up and unplugged it. I came back to it a week or so later and managed to get it to boot a usb, but i cant for the life of me remember what usb or the magic sequence i did. Im currently trying just after the screen lights up and the touchpad goes off, but not not certain its even trying to boot the usb.
Any suggestions on a fix? im happy to open it up if needed, i really need to get it running again to transfer the data off it.

Have you tried removing the disks (labeling by slot), and then power up? Just to see if the loop is somehow disk-related?

Try booting without drives first. If that works, it's unlikely a USB recovery id going to help.
But I did see a similar symptom that was cured by a USB recovery. The 516's with the latest BIOS (like the one I saw it on) don't need you to play tag with the button to boot from USB, so it was easy for me. If yours is older, then I think it's just a matter of multiple tries till you somehow get it right. Netgear obviously recognized there was a problem with that USB recovery scheme and fixed it in the later BIOS, but loading a new BIOS was not made available because, as I understand it, what version you came from made a difference as to the process needed.

Thanks for the reply,
Yep, i have tried pulling the drives but i still get the same result, the LCD displays "Netgear storage welcome" then the touch pad lights up for 2-3 seconds, then it repeats, and the fan is at full speedthe whole time.
I have a usb stick with an LED, and it flashes once quickly when first inserted but then nothing there after, not even on the next loop, only when first inserted.
I have seen a few people have had a similar experience, any ideas on what the cause may be? i have tested the power supply and all output voltages look to be within tolerance, not that that rules out an issue on current draw.
Would a fault with the RAM cause this kind of issue? or is it likely something else?- DiggersAspirant
I've managed to connect to the UART on the back, Can anyone confirm the pinouts on the 516? Ive currently found pins 1 & 2 to be TX and RX
Using Putty im receiving the following:
"ERROR: Type:2; Severity:80; Class:3; Subclass:2; Operation: 1000"
Any ideas as to what the error message is pointing to?
