RND2000-200NAS duo v2 + WD Red 5TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - WD50EFRX
I have an RND2000-200NAS duo v2. On the Netgear hardware compatibility list the WD RED WD40EFRX 4 TB is the largest disk listed. I would like to upgrade to the WD Red 5TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive...

Hello Time_Lord,
Welcome to the community!
ReadyNAS OS5 (ARM) is RND2000v2 and RND4000v2, some units would have a sticker of v2 but they are just OS4 so it is best you check the current FW version. If it starts with 4.1.x then that is an OS4, if it is 5.3.x then that's an OS5. OS4 ReadyNAS Duo only supports max of 2TB.
I haven't seen one tried using 5TB on an OS5. Perhaps consider upgrading to OS6 instead? You can wait for someone who might have tried this and share to you their experience, but it might take a while.

You can't run OS6 on any duo, so that isn't an option.
There aren't many posts here on the 5 TB drives - 6 TB came onto the market very soon after the 5 TB models, and most people seem to have gone directly to 6.
There is at least one poster who was able to use the 6 TB model on their nv+ v2 (same cpu and OS as your duo v2). He did have a rocky start, but I don't think that was more complicated than just the disk. That thread is here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/can-t-copy-files-to-readynas-with-new-6TB-drive/td-p/956292
So I think the 5 TB will work, though Netgear hasn't qualified it, and there isn't much that's been posted here on 5-6 TB drives on the v2 products.

Sorry, I meant upgrading chassis to OS6 unit, not just the firmware.

Getting an RN102 is an option, and you could migrate the data from your duo with the built-in backup tools.
Since there is risk here, you should backup your duo's data before trying this upgrade anyway. What you could try is
(a) back up the data to USB (or elsewhere)
(b) power down and remove the disk(s) labeling by slot
(c) install the unformatted 5 TB drive in the NAS and power up
It should do a clean install - and if that works, you can reconfigure the NAS and restore the data from backup.
But if there are issues, you can simply power down the duo, and reinsert the original drive(s) in the same slots. Then get an RN102 (or some other OS6 NAS) and use the big drives there.
