can't copy files to readynas with new 6TB drive
Hi there
I recently removed my 2x3TB drives from my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 and replaced them with one WD RED 6TB 3.5" SATA 6GB/s 64MB Hard Drive. After performing the necessary factory reboot in the standard X-RAID2 mode everything seemed to be running fine, the drive was recognised etc. However now I am trying to add everything I backed up from the old drives back onto the NAS I get the following network errors. These came from attempting to copy over a 6.49GB folder containing AVI videos.
After the copying gets about half way on a windows machine connected with a gigabit connection:
There is a problem accessing \\readynas\media
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.
Clicking "Try Again" merely refreshes the pop up. Clicking "Skip" closes the pop up window and gives the impression the process of copying over the file is to be continued, until after a few minutes the green process bar turns red, followed by the network error a few more minutes later. The last option is to click "Cancel". The readynas remains functional and some of the files have copied. If, however i try to copy just copy over just one movie file the transfer goes smoothy. So the problem seems to be when trying to copy folders containing files.
Attemtping a copy of a 8.58GB folder on a gigabit connected mac running OSX:
The copy got as far as 576.8MB then became inactive. A few minutes later an error appears in finer:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “XXXXXXXX” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)
Unlike when copying from windows, the NAS freezes up and can only be reset by switching it off from the plug.
On the same mac but with wireless connection the same folder copied over smoothly.
So far I've attempted to perform a factory reboot of the device, again in the same X-RAID2 mode. I have also rebooted it to perform in raid 0, in this setting the NAS would freeze up instantly when attempting a copy. I have also tried switching the auto scan setting to off in ReadyDLNA.
So is it safe to assume that this issue is related to the gigabit connection? Has anybody else tried this drive on a readynas unit? Are there any suggestions for a fix (if there is one?)?
If there is no fix and the readynas unit just can't support a 6tb drive, what should I do? I have about 4tb of data to be put back on, although this would be tedious compared to letting the gigabit connection move everything over night, it would be possible.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Matt

- vandermerweMasterHow is the readynas connected, through a router or switch or directly?
What firmware?
Have you tested the disk using Wd tools? - MattyP1990AspirantThanks for the quick reply
The readynas is connected directly to the router with an ethernet cable (not entirely sure on the grade). The connection from the computer and mac is router - approx 30m cat5e - gigabit switch - cat6 cable or wireless repeater.
The firmware is the latest version, RAIDiator 5.3.10. I did attempt to downgrade to 5.3.9 but ran into difficulties doing this, I could try again if you'd suggest?
I have not tested the disk, I will give this a try first first tomorrow.
Thanks - MattyP1990AspirantI have now tested the drive using SeaTools, as I could not find a wd testing utility? I ran every test possible and it passed them all, so there does not appear to be a fault with the drive.
I have also downgraded the firmware to 5.3.8, this did not make any difference. When I tried to upload the 5.3.9 firmware to the device the message "an unrecognised server error occurred.", this is from both machines and with various browsers.
Any suggestions? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe WD diagnostic is called "Lifeguard". If you search for it, you'll find a download.
- ukbobboyLuminaryHi Matty
I may be totally out of date here but, as far as I understand, the 6TB WD Red HD is not on Netgear's hardware compatibility list for your ReadyNAS NV+ v2 but the 4TB WD RED (WD40EFRX) HD is: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641/~/hardware-compatibility-list-hard-disks
And so, I don't believe that Netgear or anybody else can guarantee that your 6TB HD will work with your legacy NV+ v2.
Maybe one of the senior forum members can shed more light on this.

You are correct of course, and no one from Netgear has chimed in on this thread.ukbobboy wrote: Hi Matty

Netgear will almost always deny support if the disks you are using are not on the HCL for your NAS.
Having said there, there is no obvious technical reason why this disk shouldn't work. But Matt is blazing a new trail - at least no one else has posted anything about using this drive in a v2 NAS. - vandermerweMasterIt sounds to me like the problem is the drive. Your network connections won't be causing the NAS to freeze like it has I don't think. If the drive is healthy then it may be a compatibility issue.
Have you tried eliminating your router ( ie just use the switch) from the network path and setting fixed IP addresses on PC or mac and readynas? - MattyP1990AspirantThanks for the replies
I'm currently running an extended test on LifeGaurd which will take over night. If the drive turns out to be okay I'll try the other suggestions tomorrow.
Many thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you do want to rule out the network, do a direct connection between the NAS and the PC (no router or switches). A regular cat5e or cat6 cable will work.
The NAS will fail over to 192.168.168.168 (assuming the IP configuration is set to automatic), so setting the PC to a temporary static IP address of 192.168.168.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 would work. Access by IP address of course, not name. - MattyP1990AspirantI have now tested the drive and it seems to be fine. I have also connected the readynas directly to the windows machine, the first two attempts at copying a 6.49GB folder failed. I then connected the readynas the the pc using a cat6 cable, the copy then instantly failed, I think this might be due to the unit needing to be restarted? Once I restarted the readynas the folder finally copied over with no error, which is good news. I then went for a larger folder (around 60GB), and this copied over fine as well.
I then switched the connection back to cat5e to see if the copy error would come back, I think it did once trying to copy over the 60GB folder, but did not when trying to copy smaller folders.
Once again, I went back to cat6 and didn't get any problems at all, this was copying various folders of up to 100GB in size.
Now I'm back on cat5e to see if the errors come back, and they have not yet. I've now copied 380GB over, averaging 35MB/s. I'm currently attempting to copy a 125GB folder which will take about an hour.
So what does this mean?
