RNDP4000 - 2TB drives
Hi,
I have bought myself an extra NAS and want to equip it with new 2TB drives. From the HCL there are 13 options. Below my need for advice is pinpointed.
Looking at the price my best buy are:
-ST2000DL003 2TB - 97 Euro
-Spinpoint F4 HD204UI - 99 Euro
Then the Hitachi comes:
-7K3000 -123 Euro
Then other drives which I can order start from 180 Euro
e.g. Barracuda XT ST32000641AS - 180 Euro
Surfing around the forum I read the DL003 are not advised by mdmg. [source: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=62874]
Then the Spinpoints and Hitachi's are the only alternatives. I am not familiar with these drives. Are these a good buy? My experience taught me I better can spend a little bit more money for good drives (with equiping my NV+ v1 sparc). But When I am going for the ST3200's, the 3TB drives of Hitachi and others come within reach.
-Deskstar 5K3000 - 196 Euro
-Barracuda XT ST33000651AS - 216 Euro
-Deskstar 7K3000 - 233 Euro
Currently my NV+ v1 has 5.6TB (8TB in XRAID1), I have 60% cap used. So with 4x 2TB I expect to survive (due to forced deleting non-used content). While 4x3TB is also good (when price doesn't differ too much).
What advice can you people give me? Looking at the quality and performance need of the drives.
I use the NAS for storing and streaming HD-video (movies and self recorded material), music, images and documents. It's purpose is only at home.
Kind Regards,
Alfie

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe NV+ (v1) is maxed out using 2TB drives.
As for the Pro 4 it can handle 3TB drives. If you get 3TB drives put one in the Pro 4. If it comes with 4.2.15 or earlier firmware then likely the disk will be recognised as having <1TB of capacity. Update the firmware to the latest version, verify update was successful, then power down, put the rest of the disks in and do a factory default (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu). Doing this will give a clean setup on the latest firmware and the full capacity of the 3TB disks will be recognised. - Alfie1Aspirant

Thanks for the quick reply. I am aware my NV+ v1 is maxed out. But despite this actual 5.6TB, my experience learned me 4x2TB can be enough for my new PRO 4 NAS. But considering the prices mentioned above, I don't really know what to buy. 2TB vs. 3TB drives. And what brand. Because of the money I am thinking about buying 2xHD204's and 2x7K3000's from different stores. Is this a good choice, considering the quality of the hardware? Does anyone have any experience with these drives and the PRO 4?
Kind Regards,

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSounds like a good choice.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeWhile many of us prefer matching drives in a set (same mfg and model), most times other than a brand new situation or where money is not a limiting factor, this is not possible. You can successfully mix and match any drives that are on the HCL. In the 5 years I have had a ReadyNAS (various models) only for about two of those years have I had matching sets of drives. Initially it was because I only had two drives in my NV+ (v1) and the second time when I had a new NVX added. Currently I have two 5400 RPM 3TB Hitachi drives and two 7200 RPM 1TB Seagate drives and they have played nicely together for the last year.
I see absolutely nothing to critique about your decision. Just do make sure the 7K3000 drives are ones that are on the HCL. - Alfie1AspirantThanks for the confirmation. I have bought these, gonna install them tommorrow.
