Seagate ST500DM002 Hard Drives

Do Seagate ST500DM002 hard drives work in a ReadyNAS Duo v1 RND2150. I have a customer with a failing drive but am unable to purchase any of the drives listed on the hardware compatibility list as SATA II drives are non-existent in Australia now.

Any advice or assistance on you experiences with SATA III drives in this model ReadyNAS would be greatly appreciated at this point in time.

I contacted Netgear Tech Support today but was directed back to the HCL and the tech I was spekaing with was unable to adivse of any SATA III drives which work with in the ReadyNAS Duo.

The firmware on the device is 4.1.6

There are some SATA III (6Gbps) drives on the Hard Disk HCL

I would like to see more disks qualified but do stick to those on the list.

If your backup is not up to date I would suggest you ensure it is as a first step.
  • mdgm, That is the problem i cannot get any of the drives in 500GB capacity on the HCL list. Netgear tech support basically said, without saying, that it is obsolete so replace it, which my customer won't be happy doing, especially as the device is still doing the job it was setup for perfectly well.

Why should a device functioning perfectly well be thrown away purley because hard drives cannot be sourced and the manufacturer cannot advise which current model drives will work in the device

You don't need to get a 500GB disk. You can use a higher capacity one. Most users don't want to get 500GB disks any more so the disks that are qualified are mainly higher capacity disks.
  • Once your backup is up to date, you may also want to upgrade the version of RAIDiator. There are several improvements from version 4.1.6 to 4.1.8 (the latest release). The increase to 1TB is good because although the client won't gain any capacity immediately, in the future when the client adds a second 1TB, the capacity of the Duo will be doubled.
