From what I've gathered reading these boards, the firmware version reported by the Spinpoint F4 drive is the same before and after the update is applied (ie, there's no way to know if your new drive already has the patch). So unfortunately I think the consensus around here is "since there's no way to tell if the firmware needs upgrading, do the patch anyway just to be safe".

P.S. I wanted to mention that my ReadyNAS Duo with two Spinpoint F4's has been operating smoothly for a week now. Thanks to everyone on this board for their insight and information.
