ST32000524AS - ST31000528AS - ReadyNAS 102

Hello, I'm asking this here since I haven't found the answer to my questions (sorry if I missed it!).

I would like to know if it's possible to use with a ReadyNas102 the following Seagate hard drives:

- Barracuda LP ST 32000 542AS (2 TB)
- and a Seagate Barracuda 7200 T12 ST 31000 528AS (1 TB)

I'm not trying to do a "raid", I just want to connect them together and get a total of 3 TB as storage.

Also, is it better to let it on all the time, 24h/7, or should I turn it off when I'm done at the end of the day?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Those models are pretty old, and aren't on the RN102 compatibility list. You will probably be denied support if you use them. Though I suspect they will work.

"Connecting them together" is RAID-0 (so you are "trying to do a raid"). If you do that, then if either drive fails you will lose all your data. It is much safer to use "jbod". That keeps the disks independent, so a failure of one drive won't affect the other.

However, spanning RAID-0 is available in flexraid.
  • @StephenB: Thank you for your quick answer. I will do that and keep them separated in the NAS then. I will keep you updated on the matter!

@Ixa: Thanks, I had checked it before and didn't see them. Which is understandable as they are indeed pretty old now.
