notthing to be amazed but doubt that those disk are the problem....

Readynas ultra 2 connected at 1000mbps - Those speeds are pretty good for wireless. The wireless would be the limiting factor. Accessing over gigabit ethernet you'd get much faster speeds.
You should note that there's no 250GB disk on the HCL. Whilst technically 250GB disks can work, if you run into issues with those disks NetGear will deny support. Still if you had a few of those disks lying around and backup important data primarily stored on the ReadyNAS regularly then I can understand choosing them.
