NV+ from 250GB to 8TB - best method

I am not sure if you would see a performance benefit - that might depend on when you did your initial install (and what firmware you were running).

Though since your setup is simple, and you don't have a lot of data to preserve, it is easiest to do the factory default. All you need to do is power down, and install all four empty drives. After the initial setup, reinstall any addons, reconfigure shares and any users, and you are done.

I have no data to preserve other than the one test file (good bye!) and the data from the setup. I have installed the latest firmware (4.1.9) and wondered if I backed up my setups from within Frontview could that be restored. I'd have to back it up with the 250GB drive and then restore it with the 4 2TB drives. Or should I just not complicate thaings and do a factory default and let it go from there?

If you want to backup your config do the following:

1. Backup data
2. Do System > Config Backup and keep the zip file.
3. Note add-ons you have installed under Services > Installed Add-ons
4. Do factory default
5. Re-install any add-ons
6. Restore Config Backup
7. Restore data from backup

Ok. No add-ons so I can skip #3 & %. And after the backup I would power down and install the new drives. Then factory default in the power on cycle by holding the paper clip in the reset hole for 30 seconds. Once it comes to life, find the drive on RAIDair and sign in using the defaults. Restore the backup and then reboot. At that point I should be completely up to date!

Or can I do a factory default from Frontview after I install the 4 new drives? Will RAIDair see the box with the new drives?

Again. Thanks. I don't fool with an install/upgrade with these baoxes very often. One was purchased in 2006 and the only thing I've done to it is the regular firmware updates and replaced a power supply. The 2nd box was purchased in 2007 and Netgear replaced it when it went DOA a few years ago. This new (used) box is getting the works. Just did a memory upgrade (successful) and now the drives. So they just sit there and work for years at a time and it sure is great that this forum exists since Netgear won't help and even when I had one still in warranty, it took over a month to get replaced! Thank you.

I'd use the paperclip method to do the factory default, though if the only disks in the NAS are unformatted drives this should be done automatically.
