Transferring from Mac (HFS+) formatted USB drives to NV+

For my music library, I've been running 500GB, 1.5TB, and 3TB USB external drives connected to my Apple Airport Extreme. I have acquired an NV+ (2007 Infrant version) which I intend to use for that purpose. The disks are HFS+ journaled. If I copy them from the network via the Airport, it transfers at 4-5 MB/second. Doing it that way will take an eternity.

I can commandeer my wife's Macbook and direct-attach, but she would be happier if I don't. Can I just plug the drives into the NV+. Will this work? Is there an add-on to make it work? If not, would it work on an Ultra4? I could copy to that and from there to the NV+.

Thanks.

  • Its not advisable that you insert your drives directly to your ReadyNAS NV+ or to your ReadyNAS Ultra4 because the data might be all wiped out.

It would be best that you back up first the data stored in your existing drives then format them into NTFS format then insert them to your ReadyNAS NV+ then store the files you want.
  • Ixa, edb15 is asking whether he could plug the drives into the USB ports, not the main sata bays.
I'm pretty certain they won't be readable by the readynas though, but as USB drives they should not be automatically formatted.

    Hi vandermerwe,

I have assumed that the NV+ is diskless... However, if that is what edb15 plans to do, then at least my previous post would still be pretty informative though.

    Thanks for correcting me.
  • Yes, I'm hoping to read the data off of USB drives formatted in HFS+. Searching led me to a post which implied it's possible but not officially sanctioned.
  • I solved my problem by downloading a free utility called Paragon (free for W8.* only) which allowed me to read the drives on my PC and transfer to the NV+.

I am glad you did it :D
