What version of RAIDiator are you running? There was a known issue with 4.2.16. Please update to the latest firmware (currently 4.2.17: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_17_Notes)
Also having two disks installed would allow for better airflow and should mean the NAS would be less noisy.
If using the default X-RAID2 adding a second disk would give you redundancy so that if one disk were to fail you wouldn't need to restore from backup.
