Updating drive firmware...?
I've had some issues with high-end drives over the past few months and a discussion with a friend who manages a lot of storage indicates that there may have been a buggy firmware version causing some of the trouble. My question is this: is there an "easy" way to check and update firmware on the drives mounted in the ReadyNAS, or must I take out one at a time, update them in a different system, then reinstall them, wait for a resync, and then repeat?

- ReadySECUREApprenticeHello,
The SMART logs indicate the firmware on the drive. To get the SMART log download all logs from 'Status -> Logs -> Download All Logs'. In order to upgrade the firmware on the drive you will have to remove the drive. Make sure you read the instructions carefully as most drive firmware upgrades are data destructive. If you have no other drives to replace them with you can do them one at a time and sycn when done. However this may leave your data vulnerable, depending on the redundancy. - glashoppahAspirantWell, that's what I figured. Thanks for the info. I'm running RAID6, so I can get away with it, but it's going to take forever.

I don't agree with this; at least, most Seagate firmware upgrades are NOT data destructive.
Of course, before performing a firmware update you need to make sure you have a current backup, as something could always go wrong in the process.
