I haven't tried icybox, but I do use an adapter that looks like this one quite successfully. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812232002 Not sure if mine is precisely identical to this link though. I suspect that there is variation in how well the adapters behave, so results might vary depending on what you buy.
I don't think anyone claims that the adapters will always work. Internal sata or esata (if you have it) is the most reliable, but sata also requires opening up a desktop PC (which in your case you don't even have). So an adapter is the best you can do.
