Upgrade HDD on RN3100
Hello, We are using RN3100 in our environement and we would like to upgrade HDD storage on the same. Details of our device are as below: Model : ReadyNAS 310...
Were the 4x2TB disks in the NAS when you last did a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything)?
There is an 8TB expansion limit over the life of the volume.
Do you have a backup?
Also note that 4.2.21 was released some years ago now. 4.2.28 is the latest firmware for your NAS.

Thanks for your reply.
Our RN 3100 came with 8TB raw disk space and we never did any changes on the configuration.
Our plan is take full data backup before performing any changes.
So how i can bring this device working with 16TB raw data (4 x 4TB HDDs) instead of 8TB raw data (4 x 2TB)
I am bit confused about the 8TB expansion limit over the life of the volume in your reply. Could you please explain the same.
Also i would like to know how i can upgrade the firmware

There is a check-for-updates button in the admin web ui. click on "system" on the left menu, then "update".

If you did the initial install of the system with 2 x 2TB disks inserted, your starting volume size would have been 2 TB. The maximum volume size would have been 10 TB. Since that is less than 12 TB, your system would stop expanding when you inserted the 3rd drive (so the fourth expansion attempt would fail). A factory reset would be needed to fix this.
For the RN3100 you should look at enterpise level disks. Perhaps a WD RED Pro 4TB WD4001FFSX or a SeaGate NAS Enterprise ST4000VN0001.
Note there are implications for choosing a disk outside the compatibility list, but if you do choose one outside it it is important to make a sensible choice. For rackmount that means going with an enterprise disk.

We have started with 2TB x4 =8TB as the initial storage. so shall i upgrade to 16 TB (4TB x 4).

That expansion should work fine.
Regardless of which way you want to go it would be advisable to make sure your backup is up to date as your next step.
