USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

I have a RN102 - 2x 2TB discs.

In the past few days I have had trouble with my backups to sever USB hdds - several as I swap them trying to resolve the issue.

I am not at the point where the RN102 usually will not boot right when a USB hdd is attached, and if I do get it up, backup jobs (RSYNC) fail witrh timeout errors.

I am seeing lost of things in dmesg that indicate a USB problem, but I am not an expert to know exactly what:

So, what might my problem be:

a. Something up with FW6.4.0?

b. I own lots of faulty USB hdds (I am checking them with Seatools to be sure)?

c. The RN102 is faulty?

d. Something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

Just reporting back, so as to complete this thread...

I have updated my RN102 to v6.4.1, and retested the portable USB drive that was troublesome with v6.4.0. It looks like, whatever the problem was, it has been resolved and I have successfully completed a full backup (via RSYNC) to this drive.

      Hi BrianL

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

I am aware of the USB drive name change issue... until I had this possible hardware issue, I was up to USB_HDD_4 with the same drive. I had been incrementing my rsync back up job each time :-)

I have done more testing. I have now attached a desktop USB HDD, with its own power supply, and It has been recognised and mounted immediately. The previous 2 USB HDDs were of the portable type, power from the RN102.

I am re-running my backup job as I type this... well, it has been running all night so far and still has a lot to do.

So, has something changed that would affect my RN102's ability to power USB ports? I have identical drives on 3 RN Duo's, now for 12mths +, and the RN102 has had one since I bought it 7 months ago.

      Kind regards,

      Ian

        Ok. An update.

Using a desktop USB HDD (with own PSU), my backup has completed without a hitch... no errors, no admin page unresponsiveness. It just worked.

So, it looks like the bus powering of my previous portable USB HDDs is the issue...

I just have no idea why the RN102 suddenly became unable to power my portable USB HDD after 7 months, and after upgrading to OS6.4.0 (coincidence?)

        Any advice appreciated.
