It depends on which of the disks you want to replace.

 

One of the disks holds the private home shares and the ReadyNAS apps.  If you use the home shares or have apps installed, it is simplest to avoid replacing that disk, and replace one of the other two.

 

Once you've identified the disk you will replace, then you need to offload all the data.  If you want the same volume name, then you should destroy the volume.  If you are ok with changing the the volume name, then just export it (which is safer).  

 

Either way, you then

1. remove the disk,
2. install the new one
3. create the new volume
4. recreate the shares on the volume
5. recreate any backup jobs for those shares
6. restore the data

 

If you do decide to replace the disk holding the home shares+apps, then you can copy the .apps and home folders to a temporary folder on one ot the other disks.  Then after the above procedure you can find the new disk that has those folders.  You can just copy back .apps.  With the home folders, you should recreate them by logging to the NAS with each user account (over SMB), and then copy back the home folder from that account.  (Note - the NAS will recreate .apps and home on a new disk when you destroy or export the volume).

 

FWIW, I test new drives in a PC using vendor tools before I put them into the NAS.  I run the full non-destructive test, followed by a full write-zeros test.  Some out-of-the-box disks have failed one of these tests, but passed the other.
